Spring is the perfect time of year to clean out your art supply closet or that kitchen junk drawer to make creative art. Instead of heading to the craft store, we’ll use items you probably already have at home or in your classroom to make unique flower collages that are perfect for a Mother’s Day gift or your flower theme activities. This art activity gives the child choice and freedom to explore their creative expression while also highlighting fine motor skill development. With an array of art materials, loose parts, and recycled items, each little artist will create a one-of-a-kind fantastic flower!

Loose Parts

I love to incorporate loose parts play into art activities for young learners. It’s a great way to focus on cognitive skills, while also highlighting student choice and open-ended art. Little fingers can pick and choose different items to represent parts of the flower. Each child will explore and express themselves without step-by-step directions or right or wrong answers. Child-directed art promotes self-discovery and creative independence while children are exploring their creativity.

Art & Nature

To get ready for this flower art project take a stroll outside in the garden or visit a local park to spot what flowers are local to your area and in bloom. Identify the types of flowers. Can you spot any tulips, daffodils, or pansies? Then identify the parts of a flower, including the stem, petals, leaves, and roots. Choose a favorite that can be an inspiration for this art activity.

Loose Parts Flower Craft Art Project

Sort & Cut

Set out your items and see what works best for each part of the flower. Circular items such as coffee filters, doilies, and cupcake liners work well for the flower’s bloom.

Step 1-Recycled Flower Collage Craft

Try layering the items from biggest to smallest to create interest. Long, thin items such as popsicle sticks, a straw, or a piece of yarn may work well for the stem. Feel free to cut newspaper, a cereal box, or paper plates to make leaves.

Step 2-Recycled Flower Collage Craft
Step 3-Recycled Flower Collage Craft

Loose Parts

Use loose parts such as pom poms, beads, and buttons to fill in the center of the flower.

Step 4-Recycled Flower Collage Craft

Move & Glue

I encourage you to move the items around and see what you like best. Once you are happy with the placement, glue the items to the construction paper.

Step 5-Recycled Flower Collage Craft

Creative Play Option: If you wish not to use glue, move the items around and return the items when you are finished.

Literacy Connection

I recommend the book Plant the Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson as a companion to this art activity. The book explains the science of the plant growth process from seed to bloom. Children will be highly engaged as the story asks the reader to complete movements with their hands and body as the book progresses.
