Games are the perfect way to help your kids get some extra practice with a new skill. This short vowel phonics game is an engaging no-prep way to help kids learn to read short vowel /e/ words fluently. You can use these in preschool, kindergarten, and first-grade classrooms depending on your kids’ readiness for the skill.
Over the next few months I’ll also be sharing similar phonics board games for additional short vowel CVC words. Once kids learn how to play the game they can easily play the other variations, saving you time teaching “how” to play and allowing kids more time to get valuable skill practice.
MATERIALS AND SETUP
This game requires no prep or setup, so you can start playing right away!
The only materials you will need to gather are your printed game boards and your game pawns of choice! You can create your own DIY game pawns using mini erasers, counting bears, or other small toys. You can also grab an inexpensive set of game pawns to have on hand if you prefer.
HOW TO PLAY
The game can be played independently or with a partner.
On their turn, students will roll a number cube.
Then have them move forward in that many spaces and read the words on each space as the piece is moved forward on the board.
Players will play until they reach the last space on the board or beyond. Players do not have to get the exact number to finish on the last space.
Players can record the words they land on using the optional recording sheet. I recommend laminating this page and using dry erase markers if you’d like to make the recording sheet reusable.
EXTENSION ACTIVITY
If you’re looking for a way to extend the activity, once all the players are finished, you can have kids read their own recording sheet again.
This is great fluency practice and is perfect for early finishers.
TIP: The recording sheet can be reused for multiple rounds of the game so that kids finish with a longer list of CVC words to practice. This is also a way to use less paper if you are not laminating the sheets.
