Matching games are a fantastic way for your little ones to learn and process new information. Kids will start with the things they know and work through a process of elimination in order to find the aspects they are unsure of. This free printable Watermelon ABC Matching Game is a quick prep activity that you can set up during your summer theme, watermelon activities, or other summer fun activities. Use it for independent work time, small groups, or even literacy centers to practice matching upper and lowercase letters!

Ways to Play The Watermelon ABC Matching Game
The free printable includes ABC watermelon cutouts that have both uppercase and lowercase letters on the same slice of watermelon. You can choose to cut the slices in half to match uppercase and lowercase as we are doing here, or you can leave them as whole slices for a different set of activities (explained below).
Here we are matching uppercase and lowercase parts of the whole watermelon slice.
Below is a picture of the free printable ABC game pages.
We recommend cutting in zig-zag and curved shapes so each puzzle has its own unique cut to be matched by kids as they work through the letter puzzles.
Decide whether to include all letters or only some letters based on your child’s background letter knowledge.
If a child is just beginning to learn letters stand with only a few letters, perhaps the letters that are in the child’s name. Then gradually add in new letters a little at a time or switch out letters.
In a group setting, you might consider printing smaller versions of the puzzles (by printing two pages to a sheet of paper) and creating individual letter bags for kids to use in the classroom for a while and then take home.
Possible Extension Activities
Try these additional activities to extend the learning with this Watermelon ABC Matching Game:
- Print the puzzles smaller and add them to a sensory bin for a fun watermelon themed sensory activity kids can explore.
- Use the puzzle pieces to create a scavenger hunt, then match the puzzles.
- Have your kids match magnetic letters to the puzzles after matching each set.
As another extension activity you might have kids use the watermelon slices as letter formation prompts for a sensory writing tray or letter building with manipulatives.
You could use watermelon seeds, mini black pompoms or black pony beads for letter formation.
No matter what manipulative you use, you’re adding in a layer of fine motor practice to this fun activity!
