Roll and Say games are a fun and easy way to teach your kids about the alphabet. They have a chance to practice phonics skills with this fun and easy game mat.
This Roll and Say Spring ABC Game would tie in perfectly with a preschool spring unit, spring activities, or anytime you want a fun way to practice the alphabet in your classroom. This is a fun and creative way to celebrate spring while also learning about letters.
SETTING UP THE ROLL AND SAY SPRING ABC GAME
To set up this game all you need to do is choose the letters that you want your children to focus on, and then print out the game mat for them to use.
Now it’s time for some fun! Choose the manipulative you would like to use as your game pieces. Plant seeds, black or yellow pom-poms, black beans, black or yellow pony beads, and mini insect erasers all work well.
We used a baking sheet as a tray to contain the game board to keep the game piece from falling off. You can use any surface with edges, but baking sheets or trays work great!
TIME TO PLAY THE ROLL AND SAY SPRING ABC GAME
When you’re ready to play, have your kids roll the manipulative and name the letter that it lands on or closest to.
I know this seems so easy, but you will be surprised how much your kids enjoy it!
Your kids will get the chance to practice letters and it’s also great for some extra fine motor practice too.
We like to test out a bunch of different game pieces so our kids can experiment with them to see how they roll in different ways. The best part about these roll and say games is that your kids will feel like they are just playing a fun game, when they are actually identifying and saying letters!
Depending on what you want the focus of your game to be, you can choose to have your kids name letters, sounds, or even choose words that begin with the letter they land on.
For added letter recognition practice, have kids find a matching magnetic letter each time they land on that letter on the game mat.
If you are looking for a way to make the game last a little longer, you can print out a second matching mat and have your kids cover them on their game board each time they say them on the original mat.
This helps make sure they land on all of the spaces before the game comes to an end.
