Yesterday we shared how we used plastic eggs to practice letter recognition. The girls had so much fun pretending to be birds that we played another quick alphabet game to practice matching upper and lowercase letters.

As we did in the original game we started with a set of plastic eggs labeled with the upper and lowercase letters. This time instead of leaving the eggs together we broke them apart. I left the halves with the lowercase letters on them in the paper bag “nest.”
Then I hid the uppercase halves around the yard and invited the girls outside.
Like before I told the girls that someone had bothered the nest, but this time all the eggs had been broken and half. It was their job to pretend to be birds and fly around finding all the uppercase eggs to match with the lowercase eggs. They eagerly started flying around the yard to see if they could find all of the eggs.
This variation took longer as the birds had to search the nest each time to find the matching letters. They also got some fine motor practice as they closed each egg.
With some hard work and a good eye they were able to find all the missing eggs. I like this variation because it was easy to see whether all of the eggs had been found or not, and the girls knew they were finished when they didn’t have any partial eggs left in the nest.
