Look for stars that will never stop shining with this awesome Stars ABC scavenger hunt. Winter is an excellent time to discuss stars and the night sky as young kids often have more of a chance to see them while the days are shorter. At home or in the classroom build on that excitement with this fantastic alphabet activity. It’s a fun way to get your kids up and moving while working on letter recognition.
Print out the recording sheet option, and you and your kids will love finding each letter with a fun, creative, star-themed twist! This is also a great tie-in to night sky or space theme science activities.
This set is part of a yearlong series inspired by kids’ love of scavenger hunts and our desire to weave early learning into fun and engaging activities. These scavenger hunts can be used at home and in the classroom in many ways.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
This free sample of the Star ABC Scavenger Hunt includes:
- Large, colorful lowercase star letter cards
- Lowercase “Color It” letter recording sheet
HOW TO PLAY
Grab a recording sheet and let your kids start hunting! Encourage kids to look throughout your home or classroom to find each alphabet letter as provided in this printable activity. You can even take this activity outside if the weather allows.
The color it recording sheets can be laminated or added to pouches, allowing them to be used repeatedly and saving paper.
As kids find each letter, have them color it on their scavenger hunt page. This can be done independently or with a helper.
TIPS AND IDEAS FOR USE
This is a great way to differentiate instruction easily. You can specifically target letters that a child or group of children is working on learning. All students do not need to work on the same letters simultaneously. When in doubt, start with the letters in the child’s name.
WAYS TO USE THE LARGE LETTER CARDS:
- Use this as a whole or small group activity. You (or another student) pull a card from a stack and show it to students. Then, students find the letter on their recording sheet.
- Display the letters around the room. Then, use it as a literacy center option where students find the letters around the room and fill out their response sheets.
- If you let kids gather the letters, have them display them again for the next group. You can easily differentiate this option by having kids use different response sheet options.
- Use them as a deck of cards face down and have kids pull from the stack to mark the letter they’ve found on their sheet.
WAYS TO USE THE SMALL LETTER CARDS:
- Create a small sensory bin with your favorite sensory materials and the included letter cards for kids to collect and mark off on their papers.
- Send home the response sheet you choose to use as a homework activity or extra practice option.
