Dinosaur Play Dough

Last year we made an awesome dinosaur sensory bin that the kids had so much fun with. As we were reading books for this month’s Virtual Book Club for Kids, we came across a great dinosaur book. I decided to use some of the elements from our sensory bin to set up a new dinosaur play dough invitation for the girls. They loved it!

Materials for Dinosaur Play Dough Invitation

We started by reading Dinosaur Galore! by Giles Andreae. Then we made our sand play dough together. To make our play dough we used the no cook play dough recipe from The Homemade Play Dough Recipe Book. To make the sand dough I substituted dry sand for 1/2 of the flour called for in the recipe. I probably could have added even more sand, but I we were happy with the texture.

Along with the play dough we added:

  • Blue glass gems
  • Small pebbles
  • Safari LTD Dino Babies Toob
  • Safari LTD Trees Toob
  • Small eggs
  • Small pieces of driftwood

Dinosaur Play Dough Invitation

I always love sitting back to watch how kids interact differently with invitations to play. First Lovey chose to play with the dinosaur play dough. She spent a lot of time exploring to see what kind of tracks the different dinosaurs made in the dough.

As she tested them she lined them up in order. She also made a cozy habitat guarded by trees to keep the dinosaur eggs protected.

When it was Tinker’s turn to play she put all the “mommy dinosaurs” near the eggs to keep them safe. Then she built a ring of trees and wood around them to protect them.

We typically use a variation of one of these play dough recipes:
      1) From The Imagination Tree: https://theimaginationtree.com/best-ever-no-cook-play-dough-recipe/

This is such a lovely, fun activity. I’ve done a similar one making different animal tracks in play dough ‘snow’!

I love this dinosaur invitation to play 🙂 We often get the dinosaurs out with our playdough as my daughter loves making patterns with them, but I like the idea of adding all the other elements to make a whole habitat for them!
