During our preschool Thanksgiving theme we weave in a lot of fun and learning inspired by good old pumpkin pie. In addition to science and pretend play activities, we do a lot of math as well. Our pumpkin pie fractions activity was so popular, that I wanted to create another play dough mat set to continue working with math skills. These Counting Numbers Pumpkin Pie Math Mats are a hands-on way to help kids recognize different ways to represent numbers. Using these free printable math mats preschoolers and kindergarteners can show how to represent a number with numerals, in word form, on fingers, and with sets of objects.

Math Activities to do with your Pumpkin Pie Counting Mats
The free printable pumpkin pie mat set includes math mats and printable pumpkin pies for numbers zero through ten.
Adding in manipulatives allows kids even more hands-on practice, and there are a lot of fun options to choose from. Here are just a few ideas to consider:
- Cotton ball or white pom pom “whipped cream”
- Homemade pumpkin pie play dough
- Store bought orange or white play dough
- White glass beads
- White buttons
Kids can practice counting out sets to match the number on the counting mat. Spread the full set out across the table or floor, or limit it to a specific set of numbers to help kids practice a few numbers at a time.
For each number there are five mini pumpkin pies that show five different ways to represent each number. You can use all of the mini pumpkin pies or differentiate here by limiting the pies used.
Kids can get extra fine motor by rolling out play dough to show the number formation for each number…this is also a fun way to weave in an extra sensory element.
The free printable Counting Numbers Pumpkin Pie Math Mats set also includes a printable ten-frame for kids to practice using a ten-frame to show the amounts.
Simply have kids choose a mini pumpkin pie printable and then show the corresponding number on their ten-frame.
You can also place the counting mats in dry erase pockets or laminate them and have kids write on them. As kids pull each mini pumpkin pie they can write or show the number in the same way.
For the number, number word, and ten-frame we usually draw on the mat with a dry erase marker. For the hands we count on our hands, and for the domino pie we find different dominoes to match the number (it may be helpful to narrow down your set of dominoes a bit if you have a very large set for kids to search through.)
