Winter is a fun time of year to explore a snowman theme in preschool. We love weaving snowmen into all areas of our curriculum. From art and crafts, to science, literacy, and math, we’ve had lots of fun learning with snowmen over the years. Recently, we added a fun snowman phonemic awareness activity into our snowman preschool theme. Using our very own snowman phonemic awareness hats and a few white pom poms, we had lots of fun building snowmen as we segmented both syllables and phonemes.

Getting Started
You’ll only need two materials for this build a snowman phonemic awareness activity. Grab some large white craft pom poms to represent the body, and some of our snowman phonemic awareness hats and you’re ready to segment and build! Cotton balls would make an excellent substitution if you do not have any pom poms on hand.
Prior to beginning this snowman phonemic awareness activity as an independent learning center, we reviewed syllables by clapping and tapping our names. We then previewed all of the picture words that we would be working with to be sure we knew each name.
Read, Set, Segment!
We loved building snowmen of different sizes. It was fun to recognize the differences in our snowmen, as they were compared to segmented words such as “helicopter” or “zebra.”
We discovered a variety of ways to segment the words as some were tapping, clapping, or even using fingers to count the syllables. To provide more visual assistance for this activity, you could set out number cards or tiles. This will help in accurately matching the number of syllables.
Grabbing each pom pom to build the snowman also makes for great fine motor practice as those little fingers pinch and place the pom poms.
As students progress through phonemic awareness skills, this activity may also be extended to segment phonemes. For example, to segment each sound heard in “sun,” a pom pom would be added and the snowman would have three parts.
This turned out to be a fun and engaging independent phonemic awareness activity for our preschoolers. We hope you have just as much fun segmenting and building your snowmen too!
