Use this quick prep print and play free printable fall 2D shapes game to help preschoolers and kindergarteners practice shape recognition.

Games are a great tool to help kids get practice in a specific skill. They get to work on developing fluency and have fun at the same time!

Over the years I’ve shared roll and say ABC games like this fall ABC game, and they’ve been very popular. Many have requested that I create similar games for other skills, and that is exactly the focus of today’s new printable.

With this freebie you can help kids practice quickly recalling the names of 2D shapes.

Materials and Setup

There is essentially no setup for this fall 2D shapes game!

You’ll need at least one game board per child playing. However, you may want to have two for each child if you’d like them to keep track of which shapes they’ve landed on already.

To keep items from rolling everywhere I recommend placing the main game board in a cookie sheet or similar tray with raised edges.

Grab your favorite fall manipulative to use as game pieces. We like acorns (they’re free and available in abundance!), but you can also use fall table scatter or mini erasers if you have them on hand.

How to Play

To play the game a child rolls the game piece (an acorn in our example) and then says the name of the shape the piece lands on or is closest to.

Then pick up the game piece and roll again…and again as they call out the name of the shape. This is an excellent fast-paced activity that helps kids work on shape naming fluency.

Ways to Play

  • Single player, one board: In this variation one child can play and simply roll and say the shape. This can be done freely until the child is feeling ready to move on to another task, or you can set a sand time or a digital timer to note when game time is done.
  • Single player, two boards: In this variation the child will have one game board set up as described in the steps above and a second game board off to the side. As the child rolls the game piece on the main game board and says the shape, he or she can cover the corresponding shape on the second game board. With this option the child is trying to land on each shape at least once, so the second game board serves as a tracking sheet. Kids can play until they have one game piece on each shape, or play can be extended until there are two or three pieces on each shape.
  • Two players, one board: Here two players can take turns rolling and saying the shape they land on using the same board. If needed this can be a great opportunity to partner kids who need a little extra support with a child who is already familiar with 2D shapes.
  • Two players, three boards: In this final option kids can each have their own tracking sheets and they can take turns rolling, saying, and covering until either one person covers their full board or they both cover their full boards.
