Tinker has been on a water play kick lately, so we’ve been setting up new ideas regularly. Today we’re sharing a St. Patrick’s Day inspired water play bin full of rainbows and gold. You don’t need many materials, but you’re little is sure to have tons of fun.

Materials

As with any water play bin I tried to include items that would both sink and float. Here’s what we gathered…

  • Pom poms in a rainbow of colors
  • White pom pom “clouds”
  • Gold bits-We used gold coins and stacks of gold from a set we purchased at the craft store.
  • Large bin of water
  • Tongs

St. Patrick's Day Play Materials

Tinker enjoys using the tongs. I think we last used them for water play in our bobbing for apples fine motor activity. With this bin she chose to add most items to the water individually by using the tongs. Excellent practice for strengthening those fine motor muscles!

And each time one of those silly piles of gold  flipped over she worked to turn it the correct way. She called it “flipping the pancakes.”

Once all of the materials were added she had a beautifully cheery bin of gold and rainbows to play with.

She spent a lot of time stirring and swirling the water to watch how the items would move with the water. And yet again she loved squeezing the poms to watch the water squish out using both her hands and the tongs.

My daughter is a lover of water play as well. I love the idea of the pom poms in water. She would like squeezing out the pom poms too. Thanks for the great idea.
