Rainbows always bring a smile to my face, and my kids love making them. Spring is the perfect time to make some rainbow art. This pom pom painted rainbow craft for kids can be used as a project for St. Patrick’s Day or just a fun spring craft idea. My daughter was inspired to give it a try after we finished our St. Patrick’s Day pot of gold project recently.

MATERIALS FOR THE RAINBOW POT OF GOLD ST. PATRICK’S DAY CRAFT
- Clothespins-Thank you CraftProjectIdeas.com for keeping us stocked up on them! We put them to good use regularly.
- A rainbow of pom poms-You can often find bags of these at Dollar Tree
- Paint
- Paper Plate
- White Tissue Paper
- White Cardstock
- Scissors
- Glue
We always love to read a few good books to go along with our activities too. Here are some of our favorite books about rainbows.
For added fine motor practice have little ones help you make the “paintbrushes” for this project by pinching a clothespin onto each pom poms.
Then pour the paint in a rainbow of colors into small containers. We like repurposing old egg cartons for this!

FULL DIRECTIONS
We made our rainbows in a bit of a different way than usual for this rainbow craft. Instead of painting in an arc, we started with a small purple dot at that the center of our paper plate.
Then we worked backward through the rainbow, adding a circle around the original purple dot.
My daughter loved seeing the rainbow emerge. (Note: Kids of different ages will approach this task differently. Let them go with their own instincts. Their “rainbow” doesn’t have to look like a traditional rainbow if they don’t want it too. That’s part of the fun!”
While the paint dries, take a few minutes to exercise those fine motor muscles again by crumpling small white squares of tissue paper for the cloud. (You can also use cotton balls if you prefer.)
After the paper plate is dry fold it in half and cut up the center to form two rainbows.
Grab some white card stock. We used one sheet cut in half vertically. Let kids use scissors to cut out a cloud shape to go with their rainbow…here again, anything goes! Clouds are all shapes and sizes.
Next kids can glue the cloud to the back of the rainbow. Then have kids add dots of glue to the front of the cloud and add the tissue paper cloud bits.
You can save the other half of the rainbow for another project, make two rainbow crafts, or attach the second rainbow to the back to make the rainbow craft double-sided.
What you do with them is up to you! You might…
- add them to a spring bulletin board
- attach a rainbow themed writing activity to them
- hang them from the ceiling
