If you’ve been following along with our fun and learning adventures, you’ve probably noticed that we love ditching the paintbrushes and painting with non-traditional items. Pom poms happen to be one of our favorites! Pom pom painted art is perfect for many ages. It’s an open-ended art concept with so many unique outcomes. Pom pom painting is especially simple for smaller hands, as they can grasp the clothespin “brush” and make easy dabs or strokes. As we are exploring a flower theme right now, we decided to grab our pom pom “brushes” and create a beautiful pom pom painted flower garden. Just grab some pom poms of varying sizes, a few clothespins, and a rainbow assortment of paint and join in on the fun as you create a garden of pom pom painted flowers for kids!

Getting Started
To get started with this rainbow garden art project, we read one of our favorite flower books, Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert which provided a great opportunity to review the colors of the rainbow. We also discussed parts of a flower including stems, leaves, and petals. After introducing our painting materials, we got right to it and began by making brushing strokes with the toothbrush to represent the grass.
Using our pom poms to paint, stems were added for each color of our rainbow. I loved how each stem had a different size! One of our little artists pointed out that we were missing a lighter shade of blue paint for ROYGBIV. We quickly forgave ourselves and settled on the fact that we had a beautiful blue sky as our background!
The creative juices flowed as different sizes of pom poms were used along with a variety of dabs, dots, and strokes for painting. Some flowers had small petals, while others had big round petals.
Our beautiful rainbow garden even included a giant indigo heart shaped bloom. Who knew we’d be incorporating shapes into our art too?!
I love how this art project went from introductory scaffolding to child-led in an instant. The open-ended possibilities when painting with non-traditional materials always encourages creativity and makes for some pretty spectacular outcomes too! Have you tried painting with pom poms yet? We sure hope you have as much fun with it as we do!
