While we make a lot of kids’ process-based crafts here at Fantastic Fun and Learning, I don’t exactly consider myself crafty. When I learned about the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores “Cape Discovery” summer crafting challenge, I knew it would be a great opportunity for Lovey and I to enjoy some time together on a fun project.
There were so many cute craft ideas to choose from in the , but after some thought Lovey chose the Tiki Birdhouse. I loved that there were complete instructions including what supplies were needed, so it was very easy to print out and bring to the store with us. I was provided with a gift card to purchase the materials for this craft.
Our Mini Play House
We decided to turn our birdhouse into a miniature play house to use for pretend play, so we made a few modifications to the original supply list.
Instead of using raffia and hot glue for the roof, we used craft sticks and tacky glue. We also grabbed some decorative stickers that Lovey could use to decorate the house. Both of these modifications made it a little easier for her (at age 4) to do most of the work on the house by herself with a little support from me.
Before we got started, we had Daddy cut the hole in the birdhouse into a rectangular doorway. This made the house perfect for playing with our small play figures and dolls.
Lovey and I enjoyed painting the house together. She did an awesome job painting most of the house and then asked me to fix up the trim a bit. We added two coats of paint, mostly because we like painting!
Once the paint was dry we glued craft sticks to make the roof. Then we added our flower stickers for decoration. You could use any embellishments you like…theme related, holiday related, anything! We thought these ones would make our house versatile enough to use our play house as a beach hut, a fairy house, or a doll house. Who knows what else the girls will come up with? I’m always eager to see.
This is our final play house. You can also see how we used this play house for pretend play. The girls love it!!
