Last year I had the opportunity to watch my friend, Asia from Fun at Home with Kids, undertake the book-writing process from beginning to end. It was amazing to watch her journey from a book idea, through the writing and publishing process and to finally hold an incredible finished book in her hands. 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids is full of fun and inspiring play ideas to do with kids. When we first got our copy the girls were so excited to hold the book and look through it to decide what we would try first. I gave them post-its to flag the pages…let’s just say they ran out of post-its because they wanted to try everything.

For our first activity we decided to try the painted salt sculptures. I personally was very intrigued to see how the actual sculptures would feel once made, and I knew the girls would love the process of painting them. We went for heart shaped sculptures since Valentine’s Day is coming, but you could make them in any shape that suits your interests.

Following the directions in the book we made our sculptures and let them dry for a couple of days to be sure they were fully hardened.

Then we used pipettes and watered down food coloring (liquid watercolors would be great too!) to paint our sculptures.

Painting Salt Sculptures

Tinker absolutely loved watching the colors transfer from the pipette onto the sculptures. She took time to watch the salt absorb the colors and see how the colors would blend together at the edges.

Once the sculptures were painted to her liking we let them dry. The completed hearts are very pretty and hard enough to use as table decorations or a take home keepsake from school.

Now the girls are eager to try some more of the activities. With various slime recipes, doughs, paints, small worlds, sensory activities, and DIY toys I’m excited to see what they choose to try next.

At a quick glance you can tell which activities are best for kids of different ages and with specific needs. You’ll also see how long an activity will take. And I personally love that the activities include troubleshooting tips, ideas for extending play and many awesome variations for each activity.
