I love pom poms for early childhood learning and activities. You might say I have a small investment in them! They are great for little hands in promoting fine motor practice. Pom poms are usually my go-to for math manipulatives when working on skills such as counting, sorting, or color identification. Recently, my daughter got her hands on some and began creating pictures using the pom poms. What a simple and fun idea! This easy art activity with pom poms requires only one material- pom poms! It is an open ended invitation to create art that would make for an excellent quiet time activity. So forget the paper, glue, or paint, and invite your children to create art with some colorful pom poms.
Getting Started
To begin this easy art activity, I set out a colorful variety of pom poms. All of the pom poms were the same size, but you could certainly incorporate different sizes to meet your needs. We decided that it would be easiest to create pictures if the colors were sorted, so my little one got busy sorting.
We discussed some ideas for her pictures, and of course her first idea was a rainbow! This girls loves rainbows. They definitely match her colorful personality! After reviewing R O Y G B I V, she got to work.
Once all the colors were on the rainbow, she decided it had to have clouds. Thankfully, we had some white poms poms on hand!
Her next idea was to create a fish. We discussed the anatomy and characteristics of fish and then she was off to creating! I love how she chose some blue pom poms to represent the bubbles!
She went on to create a scene of flowers and even a self portrait! I really liked how the self portrait turned out and how she gave attention to detail with her color of eyes and hair. She informed me that she chose pink for her face because she’s a girl!
As simple as this activity is, so many skills can easily be incorporated. We worked on fine motor practice, color identification, sorting, and even discussed some science behind rainbows and fish! This art activity can be easily modified for younger children by drawing an outline of an image and allowing them to trace the picture with pom poms. I plan on leaving a bin of pom poms out for a quick and easy quiet time art activity.
