In most areas the more you practice something, the better you get at it. That’s definitely the case with writing, so it’s important to give kids many opportunities to write. Sometimes we write for specific purposes like sending cards, making lists, or writing letters. Other times we invite kids to write stories and tell about personal experiences, but it can be hard to think of new ideas all of the time. This year we’re starting a writing journal prompt series to help make that process a breeze for you. That way you can focus on getting kids writing and helping support them with mini lessons instead of spending time coming up with new writing prompt ideas.

What’s Included
The August Journal Set is 67-pages of information and writing prompts with various formats to meet the needs of your students.
If you’re new to teaching writing, there are tips for and a quick overview of Writer’s Workshop to help you get started.
There are two Journal Cover Page Options, one with an image for children to color and one with blank space so kids can design their own cover illustration.
Because we know that your students arrive with a wide range of writing abilites we’ve included both lined and unlined versions of each prompt. We recommend beginning with the unlined version (shown above) for kids who are not yet forming letters and able to write a basic sentence.
As kids begin to write basic sentences and understand spacing between letters and words introduce the lined version.
For advanced writers we’ve also included an extended page with lines. That way kids can keep writing beyond the main prompt page when they are ready to do so.
Use these free printable writing checklists to help students review their writing and focus on key developmental writing skills.
Themes included in the August Journal Prompts Set
For the August set we focused on end of summer and back to school type themes. There are 25 prompts total. That way you have extras to choose from if a specific theme or prompt isn’t a good fit for your kids.
This month’s themes are:
- 5 Summer Theme Prompts
- 5 Back to School Theme Prompts
- 5 All About Me Theme Prompts
- 5 My Family Theme Prompts
- 5 General Prompts
What if you already have journals to use?
No worries! If you already have pre-made journals or journal paper to use , then you can print out the mini prompts we’ve included. Shrink them to the size you need, print, and have kids glue them directly into your existing journals.
Then parents and students will know the topic as they read over journals at a later date.
Keep your journals and see how much kids progress throughout the year. I always love when we open up journals from the beginning of the year. There’s always at least one child who insists that he or she did NOT write that. They can’t always see how far they’ve come until they see where they started!
