6 Books You Can Make About Your Favorite Park

With the weather getting warmer and summer on the horizon we are spending even more time at the park.  I love our days together exploring new parks and watching the girls as they accomplish new skills on the playground. As you know I also love integrating a little bit of learning into all of our fun activities.

A while back we made a book about a day at the park learning about shadows. The girls have enjoyed it so much that I want to make a few more books about some of our adventures at the park.

Here are six ideas for creating books about your favorite parks. Some of them we will be working on soon, and others I will try as the girls get older and can do some of the writing on their own.

Books to Write about the Park

The books can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. Not only will they make great keepsakes to remember some of your days spent together at the park, they are also terrific ways to incorporate literacy activities into everyday life in a meaningful way.

You might even have a lot of pictures already to help you get started with your books. Most of these pictures were on my camera from our previous park trips!

Create an ABC book of actions your child can do at the park.

B is for balance.

Take pictures of specific spots (large and obvious or small and discrete, your choice) in a park and compile the pictures into into a scavenger hunt book with clues to use later with friends.

Make a book about parks you’ve visited. It could be a book about all the parks in your local area or a travel journal of parks you’ve visited on family trips.

Keep a journal about visits to the park. Each time you visit the park write down something that happened that day.

Lovey’s journal entry this week (dictated to mom): I met a friend at the park today. She didn’t like lizards or lubbers, but she liked ladybugs.  I hope I see her again.

Stephanie over at Twodaloo recently shared details about how she created an experience book for her toddlers. There you’ll find more tips for preparing and using homemade books.

What other books would your kids enjoy making about their favorite park?

Thanks! My daughter’s first ABC book from preschool is well-cherished…it was the inspiration for many of our other DIY books.

Ashley, you can include any nature-related or outdoor posts. Anything that could be done at the park or outdoors will go along well with the theme.

JDaniel has just discovered drawing in a journal. He loves to record events. I need to start bringing his journal to the park.
