Pizza is a favorite for family meals around here! With two very hands-on little cooks in the kitchen with me, I love mealtime prep that involves the whole family. The new DIGIORNO® Design-A-Pizza kits available at Walmart provide many opportunities for a fun pizza decorating experience and even some learning along the way! They are also perfect for families, because even the pickiest eaters can design their own perfect “slice.”
For our first taste test we chose two DIGIORNO® Design-A-Pizza kits. I knew my family would love the ingredients in the Pepperoni & Sausage with Peppers kit. I was also pretty sure they’d love the colors in the Chicken, Green Peppers and Red Onion kit, so I thought they might be open to trying it out once they made the pizza.
5 Fun Ways to Design-A-Pizza
Here are some of the ways to use these kits to add a little fun and learning to family meals.
1. Roll and Design with a Number Cube
Set out the ingredients as indicated on the package. Then grab a number cube. Let preschoolers roll the cube and add that many ingredients to the pizza. Take turns, or have everyone who is playing add something at the same time–this is the express option for when tummies are really hungry.
Tinker rolled and added, rolled and added, and rolled some more until all of the ingredients made it on her pizza.
2. Roll and Design with a Picture Cube
If you have toddlers who are not yet counting, cut the small pictures from the back of the pizza box and tape them to your number cube. They are just the right size to fit on a standard cube. Play the game the same as before. Add a question mark to the sixth side, and use that to let the player choose an item. This is an easy way for everyone in the family to participate!
3. Partner Pizza Symmetry
Practice symmetry by placing a piece of kitchen twine down the center of your pizza. Have the first person place an ingredient on one side of the twine. Then the next person should place a matching ingredient on the other side of the twine in a mirroring position. Continue taking turns going first and watch as your symmetric design emerges.
4. Pizza Art
Invite kids to create their own pizza masterpieces. They might create patterns, abstract designs, or pictures with their food. What’s more fun than a free pass to play with your food?!?
5. Family Pizza Art Contest
If you have a large family, turn pizza art time into a family pizza art contest. Give everyone their own pizza to decorate. Then vote on the “winners.” Be creative with your categories–“most likely to be eaten first,” “most creative,” “prettiest”–whatever you want! Let the winner pick the first slice.
Whatever you choose to do with your DIGIORNO® Design-A-Pizza kits, I think you’ll find they are a delicious and easy way to bring family together at mealtime, even on your busiest nights.
