Additional Tips and Ideas for Use:

  • Print the song pages (you can make them even bigger if you have large-size printer capabilities), display the song pages on a presentation device, or copy the song onto chart paper.
  • You can use the song and picture prompts as they are listed on the song charts, or you can have kids brainstorm their own Australian life and actions to include in the song and make up their own verses.
  • As you sing, either hold up a cue card yourself to help kids remember what is next or have song helpers hold up the cards for classmates to see.
  • You can also combine the song pages into a songbook for kids to read and sing during center time.

Facts about Australian Animals

Although you may have heard people call them koala bears, they aren’t bears at all – they are marsupials! While the thick, fragrant leaves of the eucalyptus plant are poisonous to other animals and people, koalas have a special digestive system that’s designed for digesting eucalyptus!

Kangaroos use their strong tails for balance while jumping. They are the tallest of all marsupials, standing over 6 feet tall. Baby kangaroos, called joeys, weigh less than two grams (less than an ounce) at birth. That’s about the size of a jellybean!

There are three different kinds of wombat, the common wombat (also known as the bare-nosed wombat), the Southern hairy-nosed wombat, and the Northern hairy-nosed wombat. All three species live in Australia, including on the island of Tasmania. Wombats are usually nocturnal, and these clever critters spend their nights foraging for food or digging new tunnels, entrances, or exits for their ever-expanding burrows!

The loud distinctive call of the laughing kookaburra is widely used as a stock sound effect in situations that involve an Australian bush setting or tropical jungle, especially in older movies. All kookaburra species are listed as Least Concern. Australian law protects native birds, including kookaburras.

Dingos live in packs of between 3 and 12, but they can also be seen alone. Dingos do not bark like other dogs, but they do howl.
