Did you doodle as a kid? During our quiet time Tinker and I have been doing a bit of doodling together, and she’s learned to make squiggles. I thought it would be fun to turn some of those squiggles into a fun fall art activity. One day after school we turned squiggle drawings into a fall pumpkin patch painting.

You’ll need a brown crayon, watercolors, and watercolor paper for this activity. We used various shades of orange and green watercolors for this project.

Start by making loops on the paper with the crayon. If you child has never done this you may want to model or practice a bit beforehand. You could use a dry erase marker and board or sidewalk chalk outside to practice so you don’t waste paper. Either way remind kids that pumpkins can come in all shapes and sizes so whatever they create is just fine.

After drawing the loops we went back and traced over the lines to make a dark brown thick line for the pumpkin vine.  Then Tinker painted the inside of loops orange and the rest of the pumpkin patch green.

The mixture of different greens made a beautiful effect on her finished fall art.

You can also use this same approach with any colors for truly abstract art anytime of the year.
