Last year while we were doing our W is for Worms home preschool theme, I saw this fun worm sensory bin from Fun at Home with Kids.  It’s part of their “Super Easy Sensory Play” series. The series is full of great ideas, so be sure to check it out.

The kids loved playing with this worm sensory bin, and it helped them make a very important observation about worms. After playing with our sensory bin, we left it out over night without sealing it. When we came back to play the next day all the worms were stiff and dry.

When the kids picked them up they thought it was so neat. And they made the connection that the pretend “worms” were like the real worms we often find on the hot sidewalk outside. It led to a great discussion about heat, water and dehydration. Now the kids understand why this happens to real worms, and they are quick to help worms off the sidewalk when we find them on our walks.

Dried "worms"

All of this play and the dry worm discovery inspired our letter W craft, a wiggly worm W. To set up for the craft I cut out a large brown W. I set it out with some wet cooked pasta, scissors, a bowl of slightly thinned glue, and some of the leftover “dirt” from our sensory bin.

Materials for Letter W Craft

To make their Ws the kids used the scissors to cut some of the pasta “worms.” This was optional, but they enjoyed cutting. It was also another way to incorporate fine motor and scissor practice.

Cutting "worms" for craft

Once they were happy with the size of their worms, they dipped them in the glue for a second then dropped them into the “dirt”.  Then all those wiggly worms were arranged on the letter W. It was a bit messy, but it was fun and easy to clean up!

Making W is for Worms Craft

When the “worms” dried we were left with these W crafts. As with all of our letter crafts, they were a great reminder of the activities and experiences we did to associate with the letter. They were added to our home preschool memory books with a few favorite pictures from the theme.
