Unicorn Rainbow Play Dough

You know we love play dough! It’s one of my favorite acitivities to present to young children, because there are so many benefits to playing with this squishy sensory delight. There are tons and tons of play dough invitation ideas in our A to Z list of play dough activities, and we’ve dabbled with rainbows before as part of our St. Patrick’s Day play dough invitation. But somehow we’ve never combined rainbows and unicorns for a play dough invitation. Of course that had to be remedied! If you have little unicorn fans, they’ll love this unicorn rainbow play dough invitation too.

Materials for Unicorn Rainbow Play Dough

  • Mini unicorns–of course! We used these ones.
  • Rainbow pieces–We used Wikki Stix.
  • Sparkly blue play dough-We used this play dough recipe and added blue food coloring and blue glitter.
  • Bottle caps-Yay for repurposing!
  • Rainbow beads

See it in Action

Take a quick look and see some of the play this rainbow unicorn play dough invitation inspired.

The blue sparkly dough makes a wonderfully fluffy “sky”. Pressing out the dough is excellent for strengthening those fine motor muscles.

The Wikki Stix work very well for building rainbows in play dough. In a pinch you can also use chenille stems, but they don’t stick into the dough quite as well and kids can sometimes get frustrated with them.

Building a rainbow with Wikki Stix and Play Dough

We wanted something fun for clouds. Although cotton balls and pom poms would make nice fluffy clouds we found that they didn’t press into the dough as much as the kids liked, so repurposed bottle caps made terrific clouds for this rainbow unicorn dough invitation.

It’s always fun to see a story develops as kids play with these play dough invitations. Here you see a rainbow path built with the beads.

And as time went on more and more unicorn friends joined the scene, each with their own voice and role in the story.

This is where play dough invitations help encourage creative thinking and strengthen vocabulary, so be sure to provide ample time for kids to play and interact with the materials.
