During the summer most of our “learning time” takes place outdoors. If you ask the girls they’ll say they’re “just playing,” but I try to incorporate play invitations that help them practice skills along the way.  This scooping shapes bubble water play is an example of how you can easily integrate specific skills into playtime.

FOR HOME PRESCHOOL AND PRESCHOOL CLASSROOMS.

To set up the activity I gathered a couple of buckets, a large shovel or sifting toy, and foam sheets. I cut the foam sheets into basic shapes. You can stack about three sheets together to make the cutting go a little more quickly. Use whatever shapes you want your children to focus on. We started with circles, triangles, and rectangles.

Then I filled our water table with bubbles and cool water and tossed the foam shapes in.

Shape Sorting Activity and Water Play

Tinker was immediately excited to go scooping for shapes. She started by scooping one at a time.

As she did she named the shape she found and placed it in the corresponding bucket.

After she found all the shapes she could see floating around, she reached in to discover more shapes hiding on underneath the bubbles.

She decided to reach in and find those ones with her hands….and the real sensory play began then!  She loves the feel of bubbles and cool water on her skin…

…so much that she decided to climb right in “just to make sure she found all of the shapes.” ๐Ÿ˜‰

You could modify this activity to practice colors by using a variety of colors and sorting the pieces by color. You could also right numbers, addition problems, or sight words on foam sheets depending on the skills your child is currently working on.

Just don’t skip the bubbles! ๐Ÿ™‚

This is a fantastic activity! The variations on it are endless! And my daughter is all about playing in water right now, so I know she’ll love it too. I’m always trying to find more activities to do with her outside. Thanks for the inspiration. Pinning!
