After exploring hands on math with our falling apples activity, we pulled out our leaf table scatter from the Dollar Tree. Seasonal table scatter sets make wonderful manipulatives for math and other learning activities. For this math activity we used our leaves to practice beginning addition and subtraction.

Materials
Note: There is a printable version of this activity included in the printable lesson plans mentioned above.
- Construction paper (blue and brown)
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Leaf table scatter (in small container)
- Number cube
- Cookie sheet (optional)
You can decide whether you will cut out the tree or invite your child to do so. Lovey wanted to play with the leaves but she asked if I would set up the tree. I simply cut branches at random and used the glue stick to glue the brown tree to the blue paper. Then I placed the paper on a cookie sheet beside the other materials.
Roll and Count to Practice Beginning Addition
Lovey rolled the number cube then counted to add that many leaves to the tree. She continued to roll, count, and add until she was happy with how full her fall tree was. As she worked we discussed that she was adding more leaves each time.
Roll and Remove to Practice Beginning Subtraction
Once her tree was full we said there was a big breeze moving in, and the wind was going to make all the leaves fall to the ground. Then she rolled the number cube again. This time she rolled, counted, and removed the leaves from the tree. She did so until the tree was bare.
Depending on your child’s current learning goals, you could do both of these activities at the same time, or you could set up the roll and add activity one day and try the roll and remove activity another day.
