Let’s celebrate the U.S.A. by making a collage highlighting the red, white, and blue! Each young artist will choose the art supplies from an array of choices and glue and overlap the items in a creative and patriotic fireworks display perfect for the Fourth of July! Our artwork will burst with color and excitement! Children will be inspired to take artistic risks and play with the materials to make a one-of-a-kind collage.
Fireworks Facts for Young Kids

Set Up an Art Buffet
As an Elementary Art Teacher, I’ve found that my students often love to pick and choose specific art supplies to use during the art-making process. They love choices! This gives the child creative control and aids in decision-making and problem-solving skills. I suggest using supplies you have an abundance of, supplies you’ve had lying around forever and are trying to purge, or items left over from previous projects. I often give some limitations regarding the number of items to choose or perhaps a color palette to stick to. I also remind students to manipulate and cut the items into smaller shapes and sizes.
Suggested Materials for the Art Buffet:
- Newspaper
- Paper Doilies
- Buttons
- Coffee Filters
- Specialty Papers
- Yarn
Standard Art Materials:
- Black Construction Paper
- Blue Fluorescent Tempera Paint
- Silver Metallic Paint
- Glue Stick
- White Glue
- Scissors
Suggested Painting Tools:
- Sponges
- Cardboard
- Qtips
- Legos
- Cups
Step-by-Step Directions for Patriotic Fireworks Collage Art Project:
- Enjoy the Show!
Sit back and enjoy a fireworks display and note the colors and shapes that you see. Did you spot any big circles, red lines, small circles, or blue stars?
- Set up the Art Buffet!
Collect a variety of materials to use to make your fireworks display. Paper doilies, newspaper clippings, and yarn are some of my favorites. Lay out the items as an art buffet and choose what you would like to use.
- Cut and Glue!
Begin to cut and modify the art materials to represent the shapes and details of the fireworks.
Cut paper into strips to make the path of the fireworks and the grand lines of light stretching across the nighttime sky. Cut stars from newspapers to create the loud bangs and explosions.
Feel free to overlap the items to create the excitement of the grand finale. Glue the items to a black piece of paper.
- Crack! Bang! Boom!
Add silver and blue paint to your work to add sparks, lights, movement, and excitement!
I recommend experimenting with:
- Cups -Dip the open end into paint and hop about to make circles.
- Qtips -Make tiny dots of color.
- Legos – Make a pattern of circles.
- Cardboard – Dip the end of a cardboard strip into make and print lines of color.
- Star Sponges – Make star prints.
