Sensory bags are great mess-free options that are simple yet fun ways to encourage sensory play. This sensory bag also makes a wonderful quiet time activity. I love to use ours when we need a fun way to occupy little hands. They work well as center time activities too.
SENSORY BAG MATERIALS
- Gallon or quart sized freezer bag
- White shaving foam
- Permanent marker (optional)
- Clear packing tape
HOW TO MAKE A SENSORY BAG
Print, cut, and laminate the emotions eggs.
Create a sensory bag “Humpty Dumpty.” You may want to create a set for each person in a small group depending on how you will be using the activity. I recommend using a gallon-size freezer bag.
Draw an outline of Humpty Dumpty on the outside of the bag using a thick permanent marker (not shown in this example). I like to keep it simple with an oval shape, legs, and arms.
Fill the bag about 2/3 full with white shaving foam. To ensure that shaving cream doesn’t escape, seal the edges with clear packing tape.
PLAYTIME:
Set out the Humpty Dumpty Emotions sensory bags and the emotions eggs.
Invite children to use their finger to draw a face on Humpty Dumpty to show the emotion on a card they select.
If possible provide a mirror or have friends partner up to model the emotion and discuss what they see. Encourage them to take note of how the mouth looks, what they notice about the eyes, etc.
NOTE: These creations will not look exact. The focus here is that kids begin to notice the visual signs of various emotions and experiment with mark making in a playful, low-pressure way.
If possible, take time to chat with children about the details they are adding so they can verbalize what they see for each emotion and how they are trying to portray that signal.
MESSY ALTERNATIVE: If your kids like to get the full sensory experience, this can also be done without a bag by simply placing the shaving cream on a tray or table if you prefer a messy play option and a deeper sensory experience.
