Hot Chocolate Taste Test Experiment-Advent Day 4

Our Day 4 advent activity was a hot chocolate experiment and watching a Christmas movie as a family. We took baths and hopped into PJs early so we could spend a little extra time together. It was perfect!

Hot Chocolate Taste Test Experiment...a fun Christmas tradition for kids

I originally wanted to try a new hot chocolate recipe, but I have been on a shopping strike. We went with good old Swiss Miss from the pantry instead of the new recipe. At 3, Lovey has only had regular hot chocolate, so I thought we would do a little mixing experiment to make it a little special.

As we were getting our hot chocolate ready I pulled some mini M&Ms out of the cupboard, immediately sparking Lovey’s interest. When she asked what they were for I said, “I was just wondering what they might taste like in our hot chocolate.” Even more intrigued, she said, “Can we try?”

So began a little sorting through the cupboard to find a few different things we could add to our hot chocolate to see how it changed the flavor. Of course, they make syrups and such for this, but we had fun pulling out different things from our baking shelf. We ended up with: mini M&Ms, peppermint kisses, mint kisses, white chocolate chips, and caramels.

Tinker helped open all of the packages.

But I think she missed the part when I said, “Give it to Mommy when you are finished.” She decided to do her own version of a taste test. 🙂

Lovey really enjoyed watching how the different items themselves changed in the hot chocolate. We talked about concepts like sinking, floating, and melting.

By the end, Lovey was in hot chocolate heaven, and she was very excited to use the fancy Christmas cups. Tinker was equally excited about her “chocit.”

Then we all snuggled to watch a short Christmas movie. Nothing like a choke hold to show your sisterly love!

And just a quick note about their PJs…For the past three years we have followed the new pair of PJs on Christmas Eve tradition, but I was always sad to see them worn a couple times and then hidden at the bottom of the drawer and outgrown before another holiday season. This year we opened the Christmas PJs on the first day of our advent calendar so we can enjoy them even longer.

Have you ever done a hot chocolate experiment with your kids? What flavor hot chocolate is your favorite?

Love the Christmas pjs early idea. Totally agree that they don’t get warn enough and they grow out of them too fast.

As for the hot chocolate, I have done this on my own before kids, what does that say about me?!? 😉 cute ideas. How did they sleep? Lol!

🙂 It says that you remembered how to have fun even before having kids, and you are going to have some wonderful times with your little one as she gets bigger. They actually went right to bed and slept great. But Tinker did wake up saying, “More chocit?”

I hear you! My girls would have probably liked the hot chocolate no matter what we put in it! Although Lovey wasn’t too fond of the minty versions.
