We are starting to get spring fever as we hear the birds chirping as they nest and see lots of new fresh growth sprouting up around us. Spring always prompts us to want to plant flowers and spend time in our garden. To welcome the new season, we will be spending time learning about flowers in many different hands-on ways.
Squish bags are an excellent way to encourage sensory exploration and creativity all while staying clean! Even better- they are easily transportable for when you’re on the go. We created a flower sensory squish bag as we prepare for our upcoming preschool flower theme. This spring flower sensory squish bag encourages creativity by creating your very own flower garden while weaving in some early math skills too!

Materials
- Gallon size freezer bag
- Clear hair gel
- Foam sticker shapes
- Packing tape
- Food coloring (optional)
Getting Started
To prepare your flower sensory squish bag, gather the materials and (if age appropriate) include your children on the assembly. Prior to filling our freezer bag, I used some nail polish remover and a cotton ball to gently remove the brand imprint on the bag. We started by doing a quick review of the colors and shapes as we added the foam stickers to the bag.
Next, we added the clear hair gel and decided we wanted to add a few drops of green food coloring for a nice grassy color. We recommend sealing your freezer bag with clear packing tape to prevent any leaks.
Spreading the color throughout the bag provided lots of fun squishing. As soon as our color was all mixed in, it was time to “plant” our garden.
Hands-On Fun and Learning
As we explored the different shapes we saw, the girls thought the green triangles would be perfect to represent blades of grass. They carefully squished and arranged the colorful foam flowers along the bottom and were ready to create their own flower with the remaining shapes.
We used the long green rectangles for the stem and some tear drop shapes for the leaves. Squishing the petals into place around the orange pollen center was next. You may take this opportunity to work on patterns such as an ABC, ABB, or AB pattern for the petals. Our toddler worked on identifying colors and shapes such as the purple oval and orange circle.
This flower sensory squish bag was a big hit as the girls explored hands-on ways creating their own gardens. How do you encourage sensory play throughout the seasons?
