Spiders are sure to elicit a passionate response from adults and children alike. Whether we’re learning about spiders for a spider theme or Halloween activities,  I’ve found that my students either love spiders or hate them! Today we’ll use potato mashers and cardboard to stamp an array of spiders crawling in every direction as they create a silly spider art project.

Children will be highly engaged in the printmaking process as they use non-traditional art materials to create not-so-spooky spider prints. They will love the repetitive hopping motion as well as the surprise print left behind. Little fingers are sure to get a workout in this fine motor skill development art activity that introduces printmaking to young artists.

Silly Spiders Art Project for Kids-Easy Halloween Craft or Spider Craft for Preschool and Kindergarten

Printmaking with Kids

Printmaking is a wonderful art activity for all ages and ability levels. It teaches trial and error, patience, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor skill development, while actively engaging all learners.

Many non-traditional art materials can be used in printmaking as well as items found in nature. Cause and effect can also be explored with each young artist as the printing process unfolds. Asking children to make predictions and assess why each print looks distinctive can also be discussed.

Final Silly Spider Art Project for Kids

Materials for Silly Spider Art Project:

  • Potato Mashers (The Dollar Store has a nice assortment)
  • Black Tempera Paint
  • Crayola Fluorescent Paint
  • Cardboard
  • Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
  • Black Marker
  • White Crayon
Materials for Silly Spider Art Project

Spider Facts for Kids

  1. Spiders are arachnids.
  2. Spiders have 8 legs.
  3. Spiderwebs are made from silk.
  4. Most spiders spin webs to catch their food.
  5. Most spiders eat bugs such as ants, mosquitoes, and flies.
  6. The largest spider is the Goliath Tarantula.
  7. Spiders lay eggs.
  8. A baby spider is called a spiderling.

Step By Step Directions for Silly Spider Art Project:

  1. Make the Spider’s Body

Dip the large end of a potato masher into paint and hop on paper to produce a circular shape to represent the spider’s body. You may wish to use a variety of potato mashers as the patterns and lines differ.

Apply an array of pressure while printing to achieve mixed results. Use any color paint you wish. For a realistic spider black and brown will work nicely. Use bright colors or even Crayola fluorescent paint on black paper to make more Halloween friendly spiders.

Step 1-Stamp paint spider bodies
  1. Make the Spider’s Legs

Cut out a small cardboard rectangle and dip one edge into paint. Stamp four legs on each side of the spider’s body. Make sure to make eight legs in all.

I often wrap tape around one end of the piece of cardboard in order for children to identify the handle while printing.

Step 2-Stamp paint legs on spiders
  1. Add Details

Use construction paper to add eyes, a mouth and other details to the spider. Use a black marker or white crayon to add the eyeballs, eyelashes, and the silk coming from the spider if you wish.

Step 3-Add details to spider bodies

Art and Literacy

I recommend the book The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle to accompany this art lesson. Through painted paper illustrations, a spider meets a variety of animal friends while spinning a web and capturing its prey.

Also, the book Aaaarrgghh, Spiders! by Lydia Monks tells a comical tale of a spider who desperately wants to become a family pet. Will the family embrace the spider and learn to love her? Maybe spiders aren’t so scary after all!

See the full spider book list here for more ideas.

When the weather starts to cool down in fall and Halloween is on the horizon, kids can’t help but start talking about costumes and candy. You start to see pumpkins on everyone’s porches and many fun events start getting planned. If you’re looking to explore the many different aspects of Halloween with preschoolers, we have lots of Halloween Theme Preschool Activities to get you started.

Here are some fabulous resources for planning your preschool Halloween theme. Most of these activities are designed for kids ages 3 through 5, but many can be modified for younger and older kids as well.

Preschool Halloween Theme Activities Planning Guide

WHY IT’S FUN

Kids love Halloween and all things spooky. There is so much fun to be had outdoors in the cooler weather exploring. There are many fun things to do with pumpkins, ghosts, spiders, monsters and much more.

WHEN TO TEACH A HALLOWEEN THEME

October is perfect for diving into Halloween activities that can follow or be incorporated into your Fall themed activities. October specifically is the perfect time to incorporate a pumpkin learning theme as pumpkins are harvested throughout the month and are symbolic of fall and Halloween.

You can divide the weeks of October into playful Halloween related themes, or save all the Halloween festivities for the last week of the month.

TEACHING TIPS & MAJOR CONCEPTS KIDS WILL LEARN

If you’re planning a preschool Halloween theme there are many possibilities for incorporating meaningful early learning skills.

These are just some of the concepts kids can learn about during a Halloween theme:

  • pumpkins
  • bats
  • spiders
  • the traditions of trick-or-treating and related cultural events
  • life cycles of pumpkins and gourds
  • baking with pumpkin

You can also use pumpkins, spider rings, and other fun Halloween inspired toys as manipulatives for many learning activities to teach math and literacy concepts.

ITEMS TO COLLECT AND REQUEST IN ADVANCE

If you get parents, friends, and family involved you can enrich the experience kids have during your preschool Halloween theme.

Collect or ask people to help you collect:

  • miniature pumpkins
  • pumpkin seeds
  • gourds
  • plastic spiders
  • candy corn

You might even invite special guests (or go visit if you can) to come and share about fields and hobbies related to Halloween. You could include:

  • a pumpkin farmer
  • a baker to share a favorite Halloween themed recipe

If your kids love cars, planes, or even trains now is the perfect time to learn all about them! Transportation theme preschool activities can be a fun way to learn about different modes of transportation and how they are used! This theme also presents many opportunities for science exploration and cross-curricular learning.

Preschool Transportation Theme Lesson Plans and Activities

Here in this planning guide there are some fabulous resources for planning your preschool transportation theme. Most of these activities are designed for kids ages 3 through 5, but many can be modified for younger and older kids as well.

WHY IT’S FUN

While your little ones might not be old enough to drive a car or operate a boat, it’s still fun to pretend to be a train conductor or taxi driver. Transportation theme activities can be done any time of the year, and are a great set of learning activities to do in between some of your seasonal themes. Transportation activities will give your kids a fun way to learn about transportation, so they can learn about everything from the sounds they make to how they move!

WHEN TO TEACH A TRANSPORTATION THEME

There is no set time period to learn about transportation. It’s a great theme to add in when kids are showing an interest, and it can fit in easily between seasonal themes any time of year.

TEACHING TIPS & MAJOR CONCEPTS KIDS WILL LEARN

If you’re planning transportation theme preschool activities there are many possibilities for incorporating meaningful early learning skills.

These are just some of the concepts kids can learn about during a transportation theme:

  • Sensory learning
  • Cause and effect
  • Force and motion
  • How transportation works in the real world
  • Different modes of transportation

You can also use toy vehicles or LEGO vehicle manipulatives for many learning activities to teach math and literacy concepts.

ITEMS TO COLLECT AND REQUEST IN ADVANCE

If you get parents, friends, and family involved, you can enrich the experience kids have during your preschool transportation theme.

Collect or ask people to help you collect:

  • Toy cars, boats, trains, etc.
  • LEGO bricks (to build your own vehicles)

You might even invite special guests (or go visit if you can) to come and share about fields and hobbies related to transportation.

You could include:

  • Auto mechanic
  • Train station worker
  • Bus driver
  • Boating enthusiast
  • Pilot

Halloween Candy Beginning Sound Sort for Preschool and Kindergarten

Children are typically ready for this activity when they:

  • can identify most letters of the alphabet
  • understand that letters represent sounds we hear in words
  • are beginning to be able to isolate the initial sound in a given word

This Halloween Candy Beginning Sound Sort Matching Game works as a great:

• Literacy center option
• Small group activity
• Take home game
• Option for fast finishers

Simplify the activity by including fewer letter bags and corresponding pieces.

Focus first on letters that students are already familiar with. Then slowly add in new letters.

If desired, make the game self-checking by adding corresponding dots or stickers to the back of the matching sets so children can check their work.

If you have small toys or letter manipulatives on hand, allow kids to add in additional items to the letter “bags”.

If you prefer to save on ink or use a different size, try printing the set with two pages per sheet.
