Character Lessons About Friendship Using Enemy Pie

Enemy Pie by Derek Munson

Enemy Pie is wonderful story of a little boy that discovers his enemy is not that different from him. I have read this book a few times in my classroom and my students enjoy the book. Some students will quickly catch on that the dad is not making a “bad” pie but helping his son make a friend. This is a great lesson for students to understand that we all have something in common.

Book Activities

Compare and Contrast

A Year of Many Firsts has a great idea for comparing friends. Students work with a partner to complete the Venn Diagram titled “Me and My Friend”. This is a perfect activity to use during the first week of school as the students in your class get to know each other. On this site you can also find other activities that you can use as extensions for this book.

Ingredients Needed for Pie

Teaching with Picture Books has a fun activity where students list the ingredients that make enemy pie (caring, listener, etc) and reasons for each ingredient. This site also includes extensions that fit into each subject area. Comprehension questions that can be used while reading and after reading are also listed on this site.

Pie Poster

In another activity, you create a large pie on poster board. Each student writes one sentence explaining one way they can be a friend on the pie poster. The poster can then be displayed in class and referred to when needed during classroom/town hall meetings.

Reading Worksheets for Book

Thank God It’s First Grade has a free printable reading comprehension worksheet that can be used with this book. It includes response sections for outlining the setting, characters, and favorite part of the story.
