Join in the #hopscotchpath challenge! Create a chalk hopscotch path for kids’ outdoor play & neighborhood community building during social distancing. Free printable inspiration cube included.
These free printable activity cubes are inspired by one of our favorite outdoor creative movement activities, DIY chalk hopscotch paths.
With a bit of sidewalk chalk and a dose of creativity kids love designing their own paths, and it’s a fun way to get them moving.
Free Printable Hopscotch Path Ideas
The brilliant part is that it’s also an activity that engages kids for an extended period of time. Let’s face it! It’s dreamy when we can introduce an activity that will keep them busy for a while.
Designing the hopscotch path takes a while itself. As they create they test out certain parts of the path and keep building.
Then they play!
Some kids will even add in extra twists like timing themselves to see how fast they can go. Others like to add decorative artistic touches to their hopscotch paths. There are so many possibilities!
Create your own hopscotch path or connect with neighbors’ paths to build a community path!
This can absolutely be done at home on your own in your driveway, but now that we’re social distancing due to the global pandemic hopscotch paths can also be a fun way to “connect” (from afar) with your neighbors and build community.
We don’t typically use a printable cube, but we’re providing this one for you to use with kids when they are first getting started.
After a few uses kids will likely be inspired to come up with their own ideas. Often my own kids work together to come up with theme-based options. Pop over to this Facebook video of one of their Halloween-inspired Chalk Paths.
TIPS & IDEAS FOR CREATING YOUR OWN HOPSCOTCH PATH

CREATING YOUR HOPSCOTCH PATH CUBES
- Print the pages you want to use on cardstock.
- Cut on the solid lines.
- Then fold and tape in place to make a cube.
The free printable we made for the #hopscotchpath challenge includes three cube options.
Inspiration Cube: Have kids roll this cube to decide what type of chalk design to add to their path next. Kids can use this cube every time or just when the feel stuck.
Number Cube (optional): If you’d like to add in some numbers and counting, have kids roll this cube with the Inspiration Cube. Then if the cubes land on “3” and “Hope on one foot” have kids add three chalks shapes for them to hop onto along their path.
Blank Cube: Use this cube for kids who want to come up with their own designs. (This can be fun if kids are designing hopscotch cubes for their friends to use.)
CREATING YOUR HOPSCOTCH PATH
Now grab some sidewalk chalk and head outside!
If hopscotch is new to your child, you will want to introduce the concept and model how to roll the cube(s) and add a new element to the path.
They’ll pick on the concept quickly and then you can pull back and let them take the lead.
And I do mean follow the kids’ lead on this. They do not have to follow the cubes if they have their own ideas to add.
Let their creativity take over if they have their own ideas. That’s the goal and part of the fun!

As school districts and teachers prepare to provide lesson plans in the event of school closures related to COVID-19, we want to remind both parents and teachers that much of the magic of early childhood comes from allowing for moments of unstructured play and experiential learning.
As such we do not think preschoolers should be getting required worksheets and homework to do in the event of a school closure. Instead let’s encourage families to take this time to slow down and connect. Find joy in the moments of togetherness and take time to enjoy a slower pace at home.
In the event that you are looking for activities, we encourage you to incorporate everyday learning and family connection.
In this free printable we’ve provided a collection of activities that are designed to be low-prep and can be done anytime of year.
We hope you find them helpful whether you’re planning for school closures or just looking for some easy go-to activities to do with your preschoolers!
What about lesson plans for those eager preschoolers who are missing school and want more to do at home? We’ve got those, too!
Choose your child’s favorite theme to explore for preschool at home. Do all the activities in one week or pick and choose activities as you need them!
