During our farm theme we used corn kernels in many ways. In addition to using corn kernels for alphabet and phonemic awareness activities, we also used them for math activities.
Counting
We learned a quick little chant.
Pop! Pop! Pop like popcorn!
I can pop ___ times.
Then we took turns letting each child pick a number less than 10, and we had fun popping like popcorn as we counted to the number.
Another time I held up a number card and the kids yelled out the number before popping away. This helped us review number recognition in a fun way.
Counting and One-to-One Correspondence
We used these adorable and free farm printables from 3Dinosaurs.com to practice one-to-one correspondence and counting. First Lovey placed one corn kernel on each animal on the card. Then she took each one off and counted as she did. Then she found the number and added her clip to the bottom of the card.
When we were done we practiced counting all of the corn kernels we used for all of the cards. She loved counting (with help) all of those kernels!
Counting Coconuts has more great farm activities including a different version of counting with corn. I also liked the corn counting activity and other farm theme activities from Living Montessori Now.
Measuring
Everyone (except the baby) loved playing with our bins of corn kernels. They spent tons of time pushing it around with their hands and pouring it from container to container.
I also added some of our measuring spoons and measuring cups. Then they started exploring with measuring. We counted how many of each small container it took to fill up the 1 cup container. They quickly found out it was easier to fill the 1 cup container with the ¼ cup container than it was to fill it with the ¼ teaspoon.
