During our farm theme we learned a lot about corn and used corn kernels for a variety of activities. In addition to using corn kernels for math activities, we also used them for alphabet and phonemic awareness activities activities.

Alphabet Letter Hunt

The kids loved searching for letters in a bin of corn kernels. Each child had their own bin. One day we searched for all of the letters we learned so far this year. One bin had uppercase letters and the other bin had lowercase letters. This was a fun way to review.

Another day I added all the letters in their names. After they found all of the letters the kids practiced spelling their names.

You could also use the corn kernel bin to search for numbers or letters in sight words and then build the sight words.

Do-A-Dot Page

We also used corn kernels to do our do-a-dot letter practice page. The kids really enjoy doing these pages, and they provide great fine motor and one-to-one correspondence practice, too.

Phonemic Awareness

One of our favorite corn activities was using the corn to practice the concept of word, the most basic phonemic awareness skill. The sentences we used for these activities were short, five words or less. I tried to include some fact sentences about corn or the farm animals we have been learning about.

First we placed five corn kernels on the table and practiced sliding them one at a time. Then we practiced saying a sentence and sliding one corn kernel for each word in the sentence.

Practice Concept of Word Using Corn Kernels

Our last phonemic awareness activity was the most fun! We popped like popcorn for each word in a sentence.

A-B-C Song

We even popped like popcorn as we sang the letters of the alphabet. But, whew, that was a bit tiring for all of us!

Have you tried any of these activities? Do you do any alphabet or phonemic awareness activities inspired by corn kernels?  I would love to see your post or hear how they worked for you.

Love the corn idea! We’ll have to do the letter hunt in the corn, that would be a hit at our house!

Thanks! It was a hit here, too. And they LOVED hearing the sound of the corn moving in the pan. My littlest spent a lot of time transferring the corn from pan to pan to hear the sound.
